EMS Week May 19-25th. - NOT JUST AN AMBULANCE DRIVER

Emergency Medical Services personnel are no longer "just an ambulance driver". In the old days, many ambulances were run by funeral homes. When an ambulance was needed, a call would be placed to the funeral director who would jump into his black Cadillac Ambulance and rush to the scene. Usually by himself, the driver would get help from others on the scene to put the patient on the stretcher, load it and then take the hair raising sprint to the hospital in an attempt to save the persons life... As times changed, the funeral director has been replaced with trained emergency medical providers with the equipment and training to provide life saving interventions at the patients side immediately and without delay. Today, just to be an ambulance driver, you must undergo a physical, background check, fingerprinting, become certified as an emergency care provider (Minimum of 51 hours) and take an emergency vehicle driving course. Those who ride in the patient compartment and directly care for the patient take advanced training. An Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) must successfully complete 165 hours of classroom, hands on and successfully complete a written and practical test. Most firefighters in addition to the fire training are also Emergency Medical Technicians. To be a Paramedic, the provider must first be an EMT, then take additional training up to approx. 1200 hours and become licensed at both the National and State of Maryland levels. Examples of treatments that can be provided are...Administration of medications for the treatment of breathing difficulties such as Asthma Attacks and reactions to bee stings, or medications. The administration of drugs for heart attack patients to slow a rapid heart beat, or speed up a slow one.Electrical therapy. Paramedics can apply an external pacemaker to keep the heart beating in a rhythmic manner. Or shock the heart when it is beating disorganized because of Ventricular Fibrillation. While the EMS providers cannot fix a broken limb, they can administer medications to help lesson the pain during transport.additionally, the providers can complete a 12 lead EKG and transmit it to the Emergency Room Physician.Improvements in communications allow the providers to consult with a physician and receive orders over the radio. Rapid transport is available for persons who have suffered traumatic injuries through the use of the Maryland State Police Medevac Helicopter.Times have changed... Driving the ambulance is now just one of many skills needed to take care of our citizens... With the additional requirements associated with Emergency Medical Services many are now paid to provide this service, while others still provide the services as Volunteers. Paid or Volunteer, these are your friends, neighbors and family members. Citizens caring for citizens, taking care of each other. This week is celebrated nationally as EMS Week. If you see an Emergency Medical Services Provider this week. Take the time to say "Thank You". It will mean the world to them. ...

Kent Island Volunteers held EMS Training on Tuesday evening. Paramedic Scott Wheatley made a great presentation on the history of EMS including a short movie that showed the group where EMS has come from, highlighting the "old days". Following his presentation, EMT Sue Colburn a past EMS Officer with department spoke about the history of EMS with Kent Island. EMS Captain Mowbray said it is very important for EMS providers to know about the history of the program so they better appreciate EMS in 2013.On Wednesday evening, 27 members participated in auto extrication training. Volunteers reviewed the thought processes involved if you are the officer in charge... talked about thinking ahead to the next step and always having alternate plans B, C, D, etc... so your ready when "Murphy's Law" pays you a visit. The members worked on using cribbing and the Rescue 42's to stabilize a vehicle before entering it... then they used the "jaws of life", hurst cutter to remove the roof.... and the spreaders to pop the doors. Lastly, the rams were used to push the dash away as if it were entrapping a patient. For the two evenings of training, the Volunteers logged 188 man hours. If you happen by and see us out there training, feel free to stopby, watch, ask questions. ...

The Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department has been awarded $44,672 in federal funding through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program. Kent Island VFD will use the award funding to purchase 12 Carbon Monoxide Monitors, which will be always on, connected to oxygen bags and will passively monitor for CO in every situation where the bag is taken. So even if the complaint isn't directly CO related, the monitor will let crews know if CO Gas is present. Kent Island VFD will also purchase a cardiac monitor/defibrillator to replace an older model unit. In addition, 4each RAD 57 units will be purchased. RAD57 units monitor and detect levels of carbon monoxide and cyanide in the blood. The members of the Fire Dept. extend our sincere Thanks to Chief Paul Schlotterbeck for his work in completing the grant research and paperwork which will allow us to purchase this critical equipment to increase firefighter safety and the service provided to our community....
